There are many reasons why an indie author might be reluctant to have their book professionally edited - Cost and the perception that their work is already "publication ready" being the top two barriers.
While I understand the cost issue, I will admit that the second reason leaves me scratching my head, because EVERY author needs at least one extra pair of eyes!
"Ingrid Hall is a smart, capable, no-nonsense editor. She understands the technical aspect of the trade well, but far more importantly, she has a solid grasp of plot, character and pacing. She will tell you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear, and if you take her advice, your manuscript will be far stronger as a result. Both of the scripts that I have sent to her have been vastly improved by the process"
Kit Power, author of Lifeline and Godbomb!
So, what are the differences between editing and proofreading and how can you decide (honestly) what your book needs?
Every editor has their own definition but this is how I work:
PROOFREADING: This involves me going through the manuscript line by line and correcting typos, minor grammatical errors and spelling mistakes. This is perfect if a book has already been edited, if the book is written to a high standard, or if the book has already been published and reviewers have picked up on minor errors. This does NOT involve sentence structure reworking or major structural changes. The cost for this is now fixed at £100/$125.
EDITING: This involves a forensic, word by word examination of the manuscript where I will do all of the above AND make significant changes to the sentence structure and enhance the vocabulary where required. The cost of this will vary depending on numerous factors, but most importantly, the amount of work involved and the number of hours that I estimate that it is going to take me to complete this. My prices are fair, (some might even say low) but I do expect to be paid fairly for my time. Simply contact me to discuss the next steps.
